Driving not-for-profit success.
Hood & Strong has been meeting the financial needs of exempt organizations since our founding more than a century ago. Today, our nationally recognized Not-for-Profit Service Group serves as independent auditors, tax preparers and advisors for exempt organizations of all sizes, scopes and missions throughout the Bay Area and across the country.
Nonprofit expertise.
More than one-third of our practice is devoted to the nonprofit sector, and our dedicated NFP team is among the largest in California. In addition to accommodating annual state and federal reporting requirements, Hood & Strong’s assurance and tax professionals are available year-round to advise on financial challenges and opportunities unique to not-for-profit organizations. We also provide customized client accounting services for nonprofits who may not have financial expertise in-house.
Who we serve.
Foundations
We take great pride in meeting the comprehensive financial and reporting needs of grant-making organizations, including community, private, operating and public research foundations.
Colleges and Universities
From declining enrollment levels to budget cuts, Hood & Strong understands the financial challenges facing colleges and universities. We regularly participate in national higher education industry events and track current developments and trends through NACUBO, WACUBO and ACUA.
Independent Schools
Independent schools face pressures in changing demographics, competition, faculty recruitment and more. We bring experience in accounting, tax, assurance, debt compliance, human resource solutions, risk management and control services to help schools position themselves for sustained financial success. We also participate in industry associations such as NBOA.
Parks, Wildlife Conservation and Environmental Groups
We are long-time partners to organizations dedicated to preserving our parks and public lands, protecting wildlife and endangered species, and addressing climate change and other environmental risks. We bring deep sector expertise and knowledge of nonprofit accounting standards to help organizations manage day-to-day finances and fund accounting, meet reporting and compliance requirements, track revenues and expenses, and effectively communicate social and environmental impact to stakeholders and donors.
Museums and Arts and Cultural Institutions
From funding pressures and fluctuating revenues, to limited endowments and aging infrastructure, our assurance and tax advisors understand the challenges and financial pressures facing arts and cultural institutions. We help put organizations on the path to sustainability through our financial analysis, internal controls, cash flow and risk management, IT integration and compliance services.
Membership Organizations
We serve a high volume of membership organizations, including private clubs, and our team is deeply knowledgeable of not-for-profit and association issues. Revenue recognition, unrelated business income and membership reporting are some of the areas where we assist our clients on a regular basis.
Social and Human Services
Competition for donor dollars, staffing, rising costs and a call to do more with less are challenging issues facing social service providers. We work with and serve on the boards of many social service organizations, enabling us to both anticipate and address financial and reporting concerns and help organizations reach their financial goals.
